Google Maps Introduces Conversational AI Search

Google announced on March 12 the launch of "Ask Maps," a Gemini-powered feature that transforms Google Maps from a navigation tool into a conversational AI assistant. Described by Google as "the biggest update to Maps in over a decade," the feature lets users type or speak complex, natural language questions and receive detailed, context-aware answers.

Unlike traditional Maps searches that rely on keyword matching, Ask Maps draws on Google Maps' extensive database of businesses, photos, menus, operating hours, popularity patterns, and hundreds of millions of user reviews to generate intelligent responses powered by Gemini AI.

Complex Queries, Intelligent Answers

Ask Maps can handle nuanced, multi-part queries that would previously require multiple searches. Users can ask questions like "My phone is dying, where can I charge it without having to wait in a long line for coffee?" or "Is there a public tennis court with lights on that I can play at tonight?"

The feature provides directions, ETAs, and tips sourced from real user contributions — such as how to find a hidden trail entrance or get a free entry ticket. Google Maps will synthesize information from reviews, business listings, and real-time data to deliver comprehensive answers in a conversational format.

Upgraded 3D Immersive Navigation

Alongside Ask Maps, Google also unveiled an upgraded Immersive Navigation experience that brings 3D road visualization, enhanced road details, and natural voice guidance to the app. The immersive view renders photorealistic 3D imagery of the route ahead, helping drivers anticipate turns, lane changes, and landmarks before they arrive.

The 3D navigation builds on Google's existing Immersive View for routes, but now extends to real-time turn-by-turn navigation with richer visual detail and smoother transitions between overhead and street-level views.

Rolling Out in the US and India

Ask Maps is launching first in the United States and India for both iOS and Android users starting March 12. The dual-market launch reflects Google's strategy of targeting its two largest Maps user bases simultaneously. For developers and AI product designers, Ask Maps demonstrates how large language models can transform established products by layering conversational AI onto massive existing datasets — a pattern likely to spread across Google's product suite throughout 2026.
